What is a SILC?
The SILC, State Independent Living Council, is a nonprofit organization governed by people with all types of disabilities from all across the state. The role of the SILC is to identify barriers to independent living and collaborate with Centers for Independent Living and other related groups to remove those barriers. It helps increase the supports and services needed to create independent living opportunities throughout the state. For more detailed information about the Alabama SILC, click HERE.
What is the SILC Public Hearing?
The Alabama State Independent Living Council (SILC) is holding public hearings throughout the state to gather information about the independent living needs of people with disabilities of all ages throughout the state. People with disabilities, family members, advocates, services providers, and other interested members of the general public are invited to participate. Information gathered will be used in the development of the 3 year State plan for Independent Living (SPIL). Comments will be limited to 5 minutes per speaker.
Why should I come?
The SILC public hearing is a chance for YOUR voice, concerns & suggestions to be heard. YOU can make a difference for independent living services and supports provided throughout Alabama. The comments collected during the public hearing will help develop the state plan for independent living. This plan will be in place for 3 years. NOW is the time to speak up for you independent living rights, needs, & wants! Everyone is invited to attend, so spread the word to your friends, family, coworkers, & community!
